Finger Millet- known as Ragi in Southern part of India, Nachni in the northern part of India) is one of the most nutritious food.  Easy to digest, Ragi is rich in calcium (reason why it is called as Chuna in the hills of Uttarakhand), protein, iron and other minerals including iodine. Ragi Upma:

Upma is one of the most popular breakfast ideas for losing weight that is great to taste. While upma is most commonly made from flattened rice, it can also be made from Ragi to give it a healthier dimension.

Ingredients:Ragi Upma

  1. Ragi Flour-1 Cup
  2. Mustard Seeds-1/2 Teaspoon
  3. Cumin Seeds-1/2 Teaspoon
  4. Oil- 2 Tablespoon
  5. Channa Dal-1/2 Teaspoon
  6. Urad Dal-1/2 Teaspoon
  7. Turmeric- A Pinch
  8. Green Chillies-2 Chopped
  9. Onions-1 Chopped
  10. Tomatoes-1 Chopped
  11. Curry Leaves- Few
  12. Coriander Leaves-1 Tablespoon Chopped
  13. Salt-To Taste
  14. Water-2 Cups
  15. Lemon Juice-1 Tablespoon


Heat a teaspoon of oil in a pan and add the Ragi flour, sort till you get a roasted aroma, now keep it aside. Heat the rest of the oil in a pan, add cumin and mustard seeds, let them splutter, now add the dals and fry till they turn golden brown. Now add the curry leaves, onions and tomatoes and fry, add some salt followed by water and bring to boil. Now add the Ragi Flour to the pan while stirring it frequently. Mix it well, cover the pan and let is cook for 5 minutes on low flame. Now sprinkle lemon juice, chopped coriander and serve hot.

Ingredients:Ragi Soup

  1. Ragi Flour-3/4th Cup
  2. Tomatoes-1 Chopped
  3. Onion-1 Chopped
  4. Cauliflower- 1/2 Cup Chopped
  5. Green Peas-1/4th Cup
  6. Carrots-1/4th Cup Chopped
  7. Garlic-4 Cloves Chopped
  8. Water-1 Liter
  9. Milk- 2 Cups
  10. Sugar-1 Tablespoon
  11. Salt and Red Chilli Powder-To taste

For Tempering:

Coconut Oil-1 Tablespoon
Cumin Seeds- 1 Tablespoon
Bay Leaves- Few

Take the water in a deep pan, bring to boil and add onion and garlic to it followed by carrots, cauliflower, green peas, tomatoes, salt, sugar and chilli powder. Let it boil for 10 minutes. Heat the coconut oil in a pan and add the tempering ingredients to it, let it splutter and add it to the soup. Follow it up with the milk and Ragi flour dissolved in plain water. Let it simmer for 10 minutes, garnish with chopped coriander and serve hot.
